The Breed
The Texas Longhorn is more than an animal it's a living piece of American history over 500 years in the making.
The ancestors of today's Texas Longhorn arrived with Columbus on his second voyage in 1493, landing at Hispaniola. These were hardy Spanish cattle descendants of the Andalusian mountains built to survive where other breeds couldn't.
Spanish explorers pushed cattle north through Mexico into Texas. Many escaped or were left behind and for two centuries, they ran wild across the Texas plains. Shaped entirely by nature, not by man, they developed an unmatched hardiness, disease resistance, and survival instinct that no other breed can match.
After the Civil War, millions of Longhorns were driven north along the famous cattle trails to Kansas the Chisholm, the Western, the Goodnight-Loving. They were immune to the Texas fever tick that killed other breeds. They could walk a thousand miles and still arrive in marketable condition. They rebuilt the economy of a devastated South.
When railroads replaced the trail drives, demand shifted to heavier British breeds. Longhorn numbers collapsed. By the 1920s, only a handful of pure animals remained. A small group of dedicated ranchers and the U.S. Forest Service stepped in to preserve what was left saving the breed from extinction by a razor-thin margin.
The Texas Longhorn is recognized as the only North American breed to evolve without significant human intervention. DNA testing traces the modern Longhorn's lineage directly to those original Spanish cattle through Columbus, through the Moorish invasion of Spain, all the way back to the ancient domestication of wild aurochs in the Middle East. They are genuinely one of a kind.
Our Story
I'm a deepwater oil and gas operator in the Gulf of America by trade and a cattleman by choice. My wife works full-time in the staffing world, and we have two young daughters. In 2023 we purchased a home on 35 acres outside the rolling hills of Jonesboro, Louisiana.
It's a beautiful property rolling hills, wildlife, and natural springs running through the middle but it's rugged. We couldn't let it grow up into a thicket, and we didn't have the time or resources to maintain it on our own. After some research, we purchased four young Longhorn heifers from Carving Creek Farm in Weatherford, Texas.
We chose Longhorns because they were a prettier option than black cows for yard art and we needed something that could take care of itself while I'm gone for weeks at a time. As a bonus, they make excellent automatic bush hogs and a pretty good tax deduction too. We had no idea what we were doing, but we loved the colors and horns and fell in love right away.
After those first four heifers we added Big Abe, a sweet old yellow cow, and bred cow Paloma from Holy Cow Ranch in Ben Wheeler, Texas then more proven cows and heifers carrying Tuff Trash Chex and Warlock bloodlines from Carving Creek and Genesis 1 Farm. Through rotational grazing and God's blessings we've grown to 21 head. Areas that were once bare dirt are now lush green pasture.
We are raising two beautiful daughters to know God, to love people, and to have a good work ethic. Our girls love feeding the cows and the cows love them right back.
We have a small but well-rounded herd with a mix of all different horn shapes, twists, and sizes colors ranging from parker red and red roan to brindle and everything in between. You're sure to find something you like!
